An urban compost tumbler is a very fascinating and useful device for the urban gardener. With an urban compost tumbler you can compost your yard waste and food waste much faster than by leaving it just in a compost pile to rot away slowly. While a traditional compost pile could take months for the compost to rot away, some urban compot tumblers can compost as quickly as a month or two. That means more compost for your garden!
Urban compost tumblers also make composting a whole lot easier. Instead of having to layer all your compost in a particular way to make sure that the microbes have the proper environment to break down the waste material into compost, you are going to be more concerned about turning your compost tumbler periodically to break up the compost and to ensure that there is proper airation of the compost. Without proper ventilation of your compost, it will not break down properly and it could go anerobic, causing a terrible smell and other problems you don’t want to deal with.
Composting is growing in popularity with urban gardeners. The proper use of compost can make your soil go from zero to hero in no time flat. Often urban soil is not very high quality and adding compost is much cheaper and better for the environment than using a lot of fertilizers to encourage plant growth. If done properly, composting can be an entirely organic fertilizer that is basically free. How cool is that?
Organic composting with urban compost tumblers is a great way to go green without going crazy. If you are looking to purchase an urban compost tumbler, you have quite a few more options than you might have a few years ago. There are many excellent designs out there now that have become much more affordable. On the high end of the price range there are compost tumblers that cost $300-400. Often these designs will have multiple compartments and will be very nice. On the lower end of the price range you can find more basic compost tumblers for $100-200.
Here’s a secret most people won’t tell you. If you go on eBay, you can find urban compost tumblers that are basically homemade. People take a older food barrel, clean it out, punch some holes for ventilation of the compost, and add in the steel bars to allow the bin to tumble and break up the waste. They work as well as any other commerically avilable composter and the best part is that they are cheap! I’ve seen them cost anywhere from $50-100. If you want to try out an urban compost tumbler and don’t want to spend a lot of money, it’s a great way to go.
