Movies

The weekend is finally here and you want to relax and have a good time. How about a movie? Sounds great right? Well hold on there buddy. Have you been to a movie theater lately? They are crazy expensive!!!! Seriously, even in the Midwest, where things tend to be a bit cheaper, it is like $8.50 a person now with a large pop and popcorn costing another $9 or $10. It’s ridiculous.

For the price of two people going to a movie and getting pop and popcorn, somewhere in the neighborhood of $27.00, you could get almost two whole months of Netflix’s 3 DVD’s at a time plan. With that plan, you probably are going to be going through maybe 12-15 movies a month. That’s about $1.00 per movie. Blockbuster is up to like $5.00 per movie rental, which is also ridiculous. So, $1 or $5 or $27, which would you rather pay? It’s a no brainer.

Choose Netflix.

Now that you’ve saved a ton of money and signed up for the best deal in movies, you need to fill up your queue. There are literally tens of thousands of great movies to choose from, so I’ll give you a few of my favorite movies that are worth renting. I’ll keep adding movies as I find good ones, so bookmark this page and check back regularly.

Casino Royale

Casino Royale Box Art Martin Campbell director of the modern classic GoldenEye directs this film adaptation of Ian Fleming’s first novel. Daniel Craig debuts as the new Bond in a performance that will leave you with no question as to whether Daniel Craig is James Bond. You’ll learn Bond’s back story as the action-packed film takes you to the Bahamas, Madagascar and other exotic locales. Eva Green stars as Vesper Lynd, and Judi Dench reprises her role as M.

Casino Royale is what you could consider a “reboot” to the whole James Bond franchise. The movie explains how bond got his double 0 status and digs into some of the reasons why Bond is such a womanizer who refuses to form a real emotional connection with anyone. In this movie James Bond goes from a unrefined agent chasing a man through the streets to a stone cold assassin getting his revenge.

What makes this movie work is Daniel Craig being matched with a non-ridiculous script. Sure it’s a Bond movie, so it’s going to be a bit ridiculous, but it’s not the full on gadget fest that the later Pierce Brosnan Bond films were. There aren’t invisible cars or outlandish laser guns. No, the threats are more basic, more real. Guns, thugs, and money. What else do you need from a Bond film?

The Pursuit of Happyness

pursuit of happyness box art Will Smith was nominated for an Oscar in this fantastic drama where Will and his real-life son Jaden star in this tear-jerking drama about a struggling single parent determined to build a better life for his family. Will plays Chris Gardner, a smart and talented salesman with a job that barely pays the bills. When Chris and his 5-year-old son are evicted from their apartment, they face many hardships as Chris takes an unpaid internship at a stock brokerage firm with hopes of finally catching a break.

This is a movie that I absolutely enjoyed watching. I’ve probably seen it three or four times and I still find myself impressed by the quality of the acting, directing, and story. It feels real and you understand Chris Gardner’s struggle. This is a drama that you will connect with on an emotional level. If you’re in the mood for a great drama, rent The Pursuit of Happyness

Music of The Heart

music-of-the-heart-dvd Music of The Heart is a movie about a woman who’s husband leaves her to be with another woman. She has to fend for herself and raise her two boys alone. To help rebuild her life she starts teaching Violin classes at an inner city school. Things don’t always turn out the way she wanted them to, but the overall story is heartwarming and enjoyable.

What is really great about this movie is that while it’s incredibly conventional and feels a bit like it’s been done before, it’s done really well and in a powerful fashion. It stars Meryl Streep and is directed by Wes Craven (of Freddy Krueger and Scream fame). The unlikely duo of director and leading lady makes this movie a excellent showcase for Streep’s obvious talent.

The film itself is not the greatest movie ever made, but it’s a very good movie that is well made. It will remind you a bit of Mr. Holland’s Opus, and that’s not exactly a bad thing. If you want a movie that is dramatic, romantic, and sincere, this is a good movie to rent.
