Wow Jim, that's an unfortunate story. Luckily there are many high quality options for security software out there, at least Norton isn't the only game in town.

Due to dissatisfaction with their service, I just deleted Norton Internet Security from my laptop after using it for about two years. While I do believe NIS prevented some problems during that time, I recently became "infected" with "Windows PC Defender" which is a trojan horse that causes much aggravation. (You can Google it to see for yourself.) When I contacted Norton support to see why this had gotten past Norton and to see what I needed to do to eliminate the problem, I was told they could fix it but it would cost either $99 or $139 depending on the level of "service" I wanted. It didn't seem to matter when I pointed out that I had been a loyal paying customer, expecting service that should not have allowed this "infection." I refused to pay to get service I thought I had already been paying for. I promptly deleted Norton and replaced it with another program that I have been happy with on other computers I use. I kept a copy of the customer service dialog with the support person to give to all my friends, to warn them NOT to use Norton.
