Product Report

The Flip Video MinoHD Camcorder is the new standard for easy to use portable camcorders. The Flip MinoHD is so simple to use it’s almost too simple. Basically it’s a small camcorder with built-in memory so that it can record 60 minutes of HD quality video. Once you shoot something, it has a built in USB connection so you can upload right to your computer and drop it on to YouTube or any other video sharing site in a snap.

Using a traditional video camera, you would need to import the video into your favorite piece of editing software, then edit, then transcode and upload to a video sharing site. With the Flip MinoHD, you take the video right on the device. Plug it in, use the built in software and share right to YouTube. It couldn’t get much easier than this. Also, it works with both Mac and PC and it’s so small it can fit in your pocket. You can literally take your Flip Video MinoHD Camcorder with you everywhere to take video anytime, anywhere.

Feedback & Overview
Actual Customer Feedback:

"It is small, easy to use, easily plugs into my USB drive and fits in my pocket. Really what else could I ask for? " -Customer Review on Amazon.com

"I have an original flip video as well (non-HD), so I will compare the mino HD to that device.

Pros: Packaging is beautiful. Unit is slimmer and very nicely made. Great simple interface and easy to use. Video clarity is quite high, certainly much better than the SD flip video. Original flip did not have a tripod socket but this one does, which is a very nice feature (and you'll need it, see below).

Cons: The lens on the HD is much less wide angle than the original flip video (not sure how it compares to the non-HD mino). I would guess that the original flip video's lens was equivalent to about 35mm on a 35mm SLR as a comparison; the mino HD's lens seems more like a 60-70mm lens on an SLR. This means that in addition to the higher resolution making shakiness more obvious, you are holding a camera that might be almost 2x magnification when compared to the original flip video. Without stabilization it is extremely difficult to keep the picture still. Even still hand holding is marginal. If you're willing to put this on a tripod or table or something very stable then it's going to work well. If you have much of any motion with the camera then it's going to disappoint.

Also like the original flip video, there is some "shearing" of the picture when vibration occurs. There is some shimmering and flexing in the picture. Not sure what causes this, as a traditional camcorder does not do this. But the original flip video did this as well.

Conclusion: If you don't mind keeping the camera very still and you don't need a wider angle lens, this is a great device. I might have waited had I known about some of the limitations, given the uses I desired for the camera." -Customer Review on Amazon.com

"I bought this camera for my daughter for Christmas '08. After the first 30 seconds of use it quit working. It would not turn on and it wouldn't charge when plugged into the USB. When it would come on for a few seconds, it had the low battery indication and like I said wouldn't charge. So, I e-mailed the Pure Digital customer support and got an RMA number for return. I paid to have it sent to them and they sent the same camera back to me a few weeks later saying it had been fixed. It did work for about 10 more minutes of recording. Then, it went completely dead, completely. The 90 day warranty has now run out. I have just written it off as a complete loss because I'm not spending any more money on this totally useless rip-off. My advice - BUY SOMETHING ELSE!" -Customer Review on Amazon.com

"This is a fantastic invention! So easy to use and very light to carry around. My only issue is the editing feature could be more advanced." -Customer Review on Amazon.com

"I bought this at Best Buy a few weeks ago after reading great reviews online. The quality of the high-def video and the pocket size of it were the main selling points for me. Unfortunately, I could not get the FlipShare software to install on my laptop. I spent three weeks going back and forth by email with their customer support (no phone tech support), where they basically kept giving me the same step-by-step instructions over and over to no avail. Finally gave up and was able to install the software on my wife's computer. Upon playback, you can visibly see a stutter in the video every couple of seconds. It became so annoying so quickly, coupled with the tech support issues, that I finally returned it today. Unfortunately outside of the 14 day window for camcorder returns at Best Buy so now I have a credit, but no camcorder." -Customer Review on Amazon.com

The consensus seems to be that if you are looking for a great camcorder to take with you anywhere and shoot HD video on, this is the best way to go. The price is right, the form factor is right, and the software to share videos is fantastic. Shooting 720p HD video has never been this fun before.
