Product Report

The Samsung SGH-a867 Eternity comes in a classy black and chrome color scheme that looks good in any environment. The front of the phone is made up almost entirely of the touchscreen display, and thus is glossy, attracting fingerprints to show off later. There is a chrome ring around the edges of this cell phone, and the entire back plate is a textured matte black plastic.

The front of the Samsung SGH-a867 Eternity is mostly covered by the large 3.2″ touchscreen display. There are, however, three buttons along the bottom edge of the phone, providing send, end, and back functions. The ‘End’ key pulls double duty as the power button, so you can easily turn the phone on and off. On the top edge of the Eternity, there is a single ‘Hold’ button, used to quickly lock the touchscreen from accidental keypresses. Along the right edge of the phone, towards the top, is the standard 3.5mm audio port, which is definitely a welcome feature. Below this is the application switcher button, and below that, the dedicated camera key.

The Eternity also provides quick and easy access to your favorite features through Samsung’s innovative TouchWiz user interface, which has specially designed widgets to customize and personalize your phone. The quick and simple drag-and-drop feature provides instant access to your favorite functions, such as the clock, music player, instant messaging photos, and AT&T Mobile TV–all from the home screen.

Feedback & Overview
Actual Customer Feedback:

"I was very excited to buy this phone after seeing some videos.

One star for sleek design. But otherwise, this is a dumb phone
failing in many areas.

Here is where the phone fell well short of my expectations:
1. no obex server support - cannot sync my phone with my calendar
on linux over bluetooth.
2. no speed dial
3. no voice dial. You cannot call a person from car without fiddling
and searching from contact.
4. Searching contacts on this phone is another pain. Many times the
hold and drag feature to search might stop at wrong letter.
5. You have buy your own memory card (micro SD) to expand memory.
6. No WiFi - This is a big miss. (though I know ..I just thought I
might give up on this).

I previously owned Sony Ericsson w810i. That was an amazing phone.
I used to remote control my fedora over bluetooth..Use that as a
remote control to do lots of fun stuff..do presentation. " -Customer Review on Amazon.com

"The phone has a nice form factor and the touch screen is pretty good. Not as reponsive as the iphone but better then most other touchscreens.
My issue with the phone is you are severally limited on what you can do with it. I love the iphone that you can add games, business apps and more to it. The samsung just is combersome to use in some ways. Everytime you use the net it asks are you if you are sure you want to let it connect. Everytime you check your mail it asks and its just annoying. If i didnt want it to get on the net i would not have used that application.

I like that its a touch screen and its a nice phone it seems to have long battery life and all but its just not really anything more then a standard phone thats a touch screen. Its not a smart phone of any kind." -Customer Review on Amazon.com

"I'm very pleased with this phone! It's slick and pretty, and it looks and feels great. Typing is a pleasure (although I don't do huge amounts of it); the vibration feedback is done extremely well. The web browser is quite decent, it's nice to have so much screen space. And unlimited data for $15/month seems like a great deal.

It's a high four stars; the only things preventing me from giving it 5 are that it doesn't sync with Gmail (though you can still log on through the web), the web connection doesn't work for me if it hasn't been used for a few hours ("403 Forbidden" error unless you switch the phone to Airplane Mode for a moment), and it's a little difficult to find some things in the interface -- I'm still not sure if there's a simple "Check Voicemail" menu item hiding somewhere. Also the volume can be a smidgen low.

"
I have really been dissatisfied with the Samsung Eternity phone features and the overall experience that I encountered with this purchase .

I have had AT&T service for a few years but as my 2-year contract expired I signed up for another additional 2-year contract with AT&T wireless using AMAZON and purchased the Samsung Eternity phone for $20 plus s&h.

Major Issues :
(1) The phone does not come with USB Cable ;
(2) does not come with wired headset ;
(3) does not come with a Car Charger
(4) The phone CANNOT sync up with Outlook Contacts !!! I spent a number of hours working on it unsuccessfully. Infact the software PC Studio from Samsung mentions that it cannot transfer Outlook contact items / fields as not supported by the software. MS ActiveSync did not work with this either. This was a very BASIC requirement that I had, this is where I want to store my phone book in ONE place and sync my PC and phone, all my previous 3 phones for the last 4 years all had that capability !!
( solutions anyone ??)
(5) The phone CANNOT sync up with office /outlook email . It only has a very short list of email services like aol ; yahoo etc. Outlook etc cannot be connected. Although I was made to believe it was possible when I had called the ATT service line and the support techs. !!!

additional minor issues:
(6) The headphone output is not for phonecalls it only outputs music/audio NOT phone audio
(7) Searching or autocomplete /speeddial on contacts is NOT available

BTW- The SIM Card that came in the box did not work with my phone after calling AT&T and their phone support asked me to finally go to the nearest physical AT&T store and get the SIM card reset as they said sometimes the cards are damaged !

I also had issues with the 3 separate additional orders I had to place extra
for the USB cable ; Car charger ; SDCard etc.
AND- They all were shipped from different vendors and all 3 of them slapped additional shipping & handling charges to me separately !!

BTW- not to mention the car charger that was suggested to me by AMAZON website and that I ordered did not fit my phone and I had to return it and get it exchanged and re-shipped for the correct one -- but this was handled by the 3rd party seller

Now after all this ....I feel I am stuck with this phone :((" -Customer Review on Amazon.com

"I got this phone through Amazon.com while signing up for a new contract, after recieving it a week ago, I've yet to put it down. I can't stop playing w/ it, finding new features, and enjoying the ones I've discovered. I put about 5 and a half gigs of music on an eight gig card I ordered w/ the phone from Amazon.com, cheap, like 6 bucks. The Eternity has great call quality, sounds like a cordless, land-line handset. The music player is great, it's replaced my Ipod, mostly cuz it's always on me, and it has more capacity. The media.net features are really nice. I got an unlimited data plan, which I might suggest to anyone interested in using this phone for mobile email, and just general browsing. The browser is a bit slow, but that's to be expected. Graphics are definately quality, and navigating the phone's menues is a breze, almost fun. I would definately suggest this phone to anyone looking for a handset that rivals the Iphone, without having to pay the absurd data rates of the Iphone's service plans. The phone has full support for just about any Java program: I've put Gmail an Google maps along w/ 7 or so other apps, like dictionarys and suduko apps on the phone. It has a 3.5mm phono jack, so no proprietary plugs needed to listen to music via headphones. This phone is so jam-packed w/ features it's amazing that it is virtually free through Amazon.com. Oh, and the phone's built in 3.0 megapixel camera takes some damn good photos, I must say. My girlfriend's been fooled that I took some pics w/ the phone and not my 8.1 mp Sony. Get this phone, it's a buyer's market right now, and I think this phone is like a penny through Amazon.com if you're in the market for a new contract. Don't think, just buy...!!! " -Customer Review on Amazon.com

the phones slick design, long battery life and featuring a touch phone interface, made it a winner for most customers. However, the phone has its own down side as well. The phone doesn't synchronize, no speed dial as well as WiFi and some other minor concerns. The phone has its great features that made it easy to use for some, but some people depends on their phones so much that the Samsung Eternity lacks.
